GREENSBORO — Having worked in Winston-Salem, I am quite familiar with Burke Street Pizza. So when I heard it opened a location in Greensboro late last year, I was excited to check it out.

Located in the Food Lion shopping center on Fleming Road, the new location feels more like a neighborhood spot since it’s a little out of the way. The eatery has a decent-size dining room outfitted with comfy booths, as well as free-standing tables and chairs.

Some diners eat in, but a steady stream of takeout and delivery orders keep the counter staff busy.

Burke Street is your typical New York-style pizzeria. They serve a pretty straightforward menu of pies, hero sandwiches and a few appetizers and salads.

Appetizer selections include the usual suspects — fried mozzarella sticks, chicken wings, garlic bread and the like. Continue Reading

The garlic knots — warm twists of dough drizzled with olive oil, Parmesan cheese, garlic and oregano — are a nice way to whet the appetite for pizza.

Pizza selections include build-your-own and by-the-slice options, plus a variety of specialty pies that include the sauceless “Pizza Bianco” (with ricotta, mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses).

Burke Street Pizza also has the “Mexican Fiesta” (with seasoned taco meat, jalapenos, diced onions, Roma tomatoes, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses) and “Lasagna Pizza” (sausage, seasoned beef, red peppers, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses).

We tried the “Chicken Florentine” and were a bit disappointed.

The crust was appropriately thin for New York-style pizza, but the toppings were a bit lackluster. The mushrooms tasted canned, and the chicken didn’t have much flavor.

In addition to pizzas, Burke Street serves a number of hot and cold hero sandwiches, including a basic club and a cheeseburger hero (essentially a burger on a sub roll).

There’s also the chicken parmigiana and the super veggie (loaded with sauteed broccoli, mushrooms, onions, bell pepper, lettuce, tomato and melted cheddar cheese).

Dessert options are more limited. The eatery offers only cannoli and cheesecake.

The cannoli are especially tasty — tubes of dough lightly fried, filled with thick chocolate chip-flecked ricotta cream and dusted with powdered sugar.

The cannoli are rich enough to share, but for those who want their own, they’re sold at the bargain price of two for $5.

Although there are certainly better pizzas to be had in Greensboro, Burke Street does offer a good delivery alternative to the chains, especially in an area removed from most of the city’s best restaurants.
