Operating partner Dan Constant, who has opened Fleming's restaurants in several other states, is a Triad resident. Chef-partner Todd Jones, a CIA graduate and former chef at The Undercurrent, has lived in Greensboro for about 18 years.

Lisa Hawley and Mary Ragsdale, owners of Southern Roots (119 E. Main St.) in Jamestown, have had such success with the restaurant that they are flexing their muscles with a new coffee shop in the General Store location at 105 W. Main St.

As a kid growing up in nearby Salisbury, I developed a strong appreciation for hot dog and hamburger joints. My parents didn't make a lot of money back then, so our dinners out were usually to restaurants like these ---- inexpensive enough to reasonably feed a family, but better than just picking up a couple value meals from a fast food restaurant.

By day, Aubrey Lockard is a college junior majoring in international and global human rights at UNCG.

By night, she transforms into Molly Flogger, a tattooed, fast-skating and hard-hitting enthusiast of the contact sport on wheels known as roller derby.

"I guess it's an outlet for my anger that's not too aggressive," says Lockard, 22, who grew up in Beulaville.
