A Q&A with the photographer from Winston-Salem.

The genesis of a photographer

I have been a photographer ever since I was a kid. I had a bunch of different little cameras, and I would take pictures of anything I thought was interesting. After I graduated college, I met people who were photographers, and they were doing it as a job. So, I looked at that more seriously and thought, "You know what? I can do this. And I can make a living doing it."

I just became more confident in my ability to make a living at it instead of just doing it as a hobby.

Discoveries about her father

My dad (Zach Reynolds, grandson of R.J. Reynolds), when he was in the Navy, was in the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Defense); they would disassemble bombs. A lot of them, after they get out of the Navy, are kind of shoo-ins for the CIA. They have all of the SEAL training to be in the EOD. So, that's a testament to how intense he was even at 19; he was disassembling bombs! I've always known that he was meticulous and just did everything with excellence. He put a lot of emphasis on how you did the job -- not just getting it done, but doing it with excellence and maintaining character at the same time.

Losing her father in a plane crash

I'm fascinated with my dad's story (he died in a 1979 plane crash in Stokes County) because it's so different than the average life.

I feel like I've lived a fairly normal life, but then my dad's life was so extraordinary and so much more than what anyone would've lived nowadays -- growing up with so much wealth and doing so many different things and then exceeding at everything he did.

His story is a very fascinating one to me. And everyone else has stories about him and ... I don't have a story about him. So, there's the disconnect.

Her photo series 'Dr. Zach: The Father I Never Knew'

Through the series I feel like I'm making the connection. I'm learning and researching to make that connection with him, to have my own personal story, as well. (Her mother, Dorothy Reynolds) is like, "Your dad would be so proud, and he would love them. He would think the series is great. He would be so honored to be remembered in this way." In this work, I re-create iconic photographs of my father. &ellipses; The idea of the self-portrait came about from analyzing how my spirit is the continuation of his spirit.

Her Inspiration

I'm inspired by different philosophical thoughts, like my "Double Vision" series that I'm doing on the different elementals: earth, fire, air and water. I'm kind of creating what I think in my mind would be the spirits of air or the spirit of water in a visual form.

I drove from North Carolina to Phoenix, Ariz., on I-40. &ellipses; I drove out there to photograph the plane -- my dad's -- and I was taking (pictures) out of the window as I was driving. As I was driving out there, I kept seeing all of this desolation ... empty businesses and "For Sale" signs. That one ("The Foreclosure" series) was just there and had to be photographed. And then doing it in infrared &ellipses; stripped the color away from it, just showing the vegetation and the deadness of it.

Traditional and modern photography

Before photography changed over to digital shooting, there were film negatives. ... Nowadays, most photographers shoot digital images, where there is no negative. I also shoot digital because the market demands the speed of it. However, I differ because I do not print with an inkjet printer like most modern photographers do.

Traditional prints are much more expensive; however, they are far superior. The visual quality is much better. I use this process because I believe in absolute quality and visual perfection.
