GREENSBORO — Fiddling storyteller Mike Cross and newgrass singer John Cowan and his band will headline this year’s EMFfringe series of alternative music.
The series, now in its seventh season, coincides with the classical festival and school that the Eastern Music Festival presents each summer at Guilford College.
EMFfringe will feature eight events in July, with six shows at Triad Stage. The first four concerts will offer general admission seating for $22.
Ticketholders also will receive free admission to concert after-parties at various downtown restaurants and wine bars.
The lineup includes:
• The hard-rocking Chris Hicks Band on July 9. Party follows at UpStage Cabaret at Triad Stage, with food from the Mellow Mushroom.
• Two of 2008’s EMFfringe sold-out groups return: Steep Canyon Rangers on July 18 and The Waybacks on July 23.
The July 18 after-party will be at Level 2, 113 S. Elm St. The July 23 party will be at Rim Tapas and Fine Wine Bar, 219 S. Elm St., with music from Salter Path.
• On July 24, The Larry McCray Band, led by the blues-rock guitarist, will make its EMFfringe debut. The after-party will feature acoustic guitarist Bill West at a location to be announced.
• The season will end with two concerts from EMFfringe first-timers: The John Cowan Band on July 25 and Mike Cross on July 30. Single tickets for each of the special events will be $27; no discounts.
The July 25 after-party will be at Churchill’s on Elm, 213 S. Elm St. Sam Frazier will perform at the July 30 after-party at 223 South Elm.
• A free EMFfringe concert with The New Familiars will be presented in partnership with Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park summer series at 6 p.m. July 26 on Founders Lawn at Guilford College.
The season will be launched at a free party at 6:30 p.m. July 2 at Natty Greene’s Pub and Brewing Co., 345 S. Elm St. with music from Holy Ghost Tent Revival.
EMFfringe season ticket subscribers receive four bonus concert tickets plus free admission into EMF master classes and Sunday piano recitals. Bonus concerts will feature the Northwest Boychoir, Bel Canto High School Choir Festival, EMF Brass Ensemble and EMF Percussion Ensemble.
